Classes Maia Teaches
Maia offers four types of bellydance classes:
Bellydance Technique 1 is basic bellydance technique. Learn shapes and steps, musical terms and styles, cultural background, posture and strength in a safe, supportive, fun and positive atmosphere. Love your body in motion, develop core strength and flexibility, sweat and challenge your body and brain. Most dancers find this class helpful for one to three years as a foundational practice.
Bellydance Technique 2 starts to put the movements together into choreographies, while continuing to develop complexity and musicality. Movements become deeper and more integrated, drawing on abdominal musculature, more sweating. Combinations will often challenge and combine both upper and lower body. Added skill sets will include finger cymbals, veil & assaya (cane), and emphasis will be on Egyptian style. This class will build your dance skills for two to four years.
Bellydance Technique Drills is for dancers who want to develop strong basic dance vocabulary skills. The class starts with Maia's BellyBarre(tm), a set of torso articulation drills that assist in defining and refining the movements of bellydance, enhancing consciousness of the motion within the body. From there the class targets a specific movement family each week to drill. Sweating is profuse.
Advanced Technique and Performance Group is by audition only. Recommended to have a minimum of four years dancing. Let's not even talk about the sweat.
All classes include a warm-up, shimmy drills appropriate to level and a gentle stretching cool-down. Maia provides personal attention and gentle, encouraging correction. Benefits of bellydance include increasing awareness and self-correction of posture, enhanced core strength, increased overall muscle tone, better circulation and improved body-image. Don't forget FUN! Classes welcome all ages, sizes, levels of fitness, genders, abilities, colors and cultural backgrounds. The beauty of bellydance is that it includes everyone.
